Selected as one of seven installations from among 80 international submissions, Subterranean combined the everyday materials of landscape architecture into an experiential art piece. As visitors moved first through a composition of ramps and berms of granular, and then a tangled canopy of black PVC pipe, they encountered the subterranean world of root infrastructure – an effect heightened by the increase in humidity, reduction of light, and loss of distant view. The installation evoked the fluid and complex nature of the site’s hidden hydrological structure and allowed visitors to explore unexpected views of nature.
