The Centre for Food (CFF), located on the Whitby Campus of Durham College, accommodates 900 students studying in the fields of culinary, hospitality, tourism, agriculture and horticulture.

A new 36,000 square foot building designed by Gow Hastings Architects was opened in September 2013. The project followed the field-to-fork approach, which is based on the harvesting, storage, processing, packaging, sale and consumption of food. The vision included production of local food for local consumers, which incorporated a landscape designed to be visually engaging and educational to both students and visitors.

The extensive CFF landscape included: agricultural crops for research and new product development, demonstration plots, residential orchards, green houses, a green roof, an apiary, a pollinator habitat, an outdoor cooking demonstration area and landscape features including a network of walkways, a sustainable irrigation strategy, and a lighting strategy.

Janet Rosenberg & Studio worked with Durham College and the Centre for Food to design and realize this functional learning laboratory landscape. The project was built over the spring and summer of 2014.
