Community Common is a neighbourhood park in downtown Mississauga adjacent to several new condominium developments.
It is intended to become a year-round hub for communal events, activities, and everyday interactions. The goal behind our design of this park is to create a flexible and functional green space that can comfortably accommodate small and large groups of people. A multi-use sodded playing field, an off-leash area, a sloped open lawn, flexible seating, an angular and geometric washroom facility, water feature, and an inviting entry plaza are the park’s main elements. In order to effectively connect the site with the rest of the city, we used large-growing shade trees and oversized pots to define the edges of the park and create microclimatic allees. These shaded allees are also wide and promote pedestrian use.
Community Common Park is imbued with strong identity and iconic elements that will help to establish the new community within Mississauga’s downtown core.
Our design is guided by principles of environmental sustainability. We maximized softscape and minimized hardscape to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff. In addition, our scheme incorporates native, large-growing shade trees to reduce heat island effect and smog. Low maintenance materials have been selected and a designated dog area will ensure that waste is contained and lawns are not damaged.
