The Pan Am and Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus housed the swimming and fencing events at the 2015 Games.
Described as the largest-ever investment in Canadian amateur sport, the $205 million, 360,000 square foot facility contains two Olympic-sized swimming pools, a diving tank, and dry-land training facilities, as well as flexible gym space and a track and fitness area. After the games were over, UTSC and the City of Toronto obtained ownership of the facility, and it is now available to students and the community.
The landscape design on the 40,000 square meter site conveys a sophisticated, urban aesthetic.
The landscape includes a main plaza that accommodates a variety of groups and uses, multi-modal and accessible circulation routes and entrances, two large “green” parking lots, and softscape areas for passive recreation. Sustainability is an important focus, with features such as high-reflectivity paving and a green roof to combat the heat island effect, extensive use of a special, low maintenance, drought tolerant grass mix to replace turf grass, and irrigation with harvested rainwater.
