Construction Underway for the Revitalization of Elizabethan Square in George Town, Grand Cayman
Posted January 30, 2026
Construction is underway on the revitalization of Elizabethan Square, an established commercial complex in George Town, Grand Cayman, first developed in the early 1980s. Located in the town centre, the project forms part of a broader urban revitalization initiative aimed at enhancing public space in George Town. Construction commenced in March 2025.
As reported by the Cayman Compass, the project will open the interior courtyard to the public, transforming it into a piazza-style civic space. The renewed square will feature hardy locally sourced indigenous tropical planting, generous shade, a central water feature, and flexible areas for concerts and performances. Given the island climate, thermal comfort has been a central design consideration.
“Shade is a critical factor to the comfort of the space and has been addressed through the inclusion of fixed shades around the perimeter of the front three buildings and courtyard, permanent shade structures throughout the square, movable umbrellas, and a mature tree canopy of both new and preserved trees,” writes Rovida Estates.
This transformation marks a significant investment in the public realm of George Town, enhancing accessibility, comfort, and civic life through climate responsive design. We look forward to seeing this project realized!
