Evaluating the Climate Impacts of Projects Through BIM and Related Platforms

How can landscape architects meaningfully contribute to a net zero carbon future?

In support of the ongoing work of the ASLA Climate & Biodiversity Action Committee, Radu Dicher (SWA Group), Eric Gilbey (Vectorworks), and Matt Perotto (JRS) have authored a new guide that helps translate climate ambition into measurable project data.

The resource provides high-level direction and practical workflows for assessing carbon impacts across the full project lifecycle, from concept through construction, using BIM and BIM-proxy tools. It includes step-by-step approaches for Revit, Vectorworks, and Rhino + Grasshopper, grounding carbon literacy within everyday design practice.

Conceived as a living document, the guide will evolve alongside emerging tools, data, and methodologies, and invites continued contribution from the profession.

We’re proud of Matt’s leadership and contribution to advancing climate-responsive landscape architecture.
