Completed in December 2017, the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension Project is a new 8.6-kilometre rapid transit line from Sheppard West north to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. Six new stations were added to the TTC’s Yonge–University Line 1, including two designed by renowned UK architect, Will Alsop – Finch West and Pioneer Village stations. JRS was part of the international, multi-disciplinary team of architects and engineers, and designed the landscape architectural components for both stations.
Our scope of work included entry plazas, integration of public art, sustainable planting design, bus terminal landscapes, commuter parking lot design, drop-off areas, and streetscape improvements. Pioneer Village Station featured sculptural faceted concrete benches, customized decorative pedestrian barriers, structural grass pavers, pervious concrete pavement, and decorative coloured concrete paving. Plantings included salt tolerant and native plant mixes of perennials, ornamental grasses, shrubs, and trees.
