The Portland Commons redevelopment is a four-storey apartment building and five two-storey townhouses in the Millidgeville neighbourhood of Saint John, New Brunswick. The project will add new mixed-income rental homes adjacent to the retained Portland United Church. A third of the new rental homes will be available at below-market-rate.
Accessibility and safety have been considered across the development, with barrier-free entrances to the townhouses and the church, and a one-way road that creates a pedestrian-friendly space and reduces vehicle speeds.
The project targets an 80 per cent reduction in embodied carbon against industry standard, and the design uses Passive House principles to enable low energy use throughout the building’s life.
Portland Commons is one of many Kindred Works projects we’re working on with KPMB to introduce sustainable mixed-income rental housing strategies on urban infill properties across Canada.
