Wexford Heights is a new multi-storey, purpose-built rental apartment building located at 2102 Lawrence Avenue East in Scarborough. The property is currently the site of the Wexford Heights United Church and the Zion-Wexford Cemetery. The cemetery and historic chapel will remain on the site, with parts of the heritage church incorporated into the design of the new building as new community space.
Public gathering spaces and accessibility are crucial elements of the project design. Based on City and community feedback, the project has undergone several improvements to the building and public spaces, including a reduced paved driving area, an increase in green space, and enlarged setbacks to the adjacent properties. A community playground area has been added, and sidewalks have been modified with a lowered entrance for better accessibility and improved connection to the streetscape.
As with all Kindred Works projects, accessibility and sustainability are core values. One-third of the new units are targeted to be barrier-free. The project also targets an 80 percent reduction in embodied carbon against industry standards.
Wexford Heights is one of many Kindred Works projects we’re working on with KPMB to introduce sustainable mixed-income rental housing strategies on urban infill properties across Canada.
