Situated at the heart of Toronto’s Waterfront neighbourhood with incredible views to Lake Ontario, Yonge Plaza is a unique privately-owned public space that anchors two residential condominium towers: 10 Yonge St and 10 Queens Quay. A large, paved plaza featuring the sculpture Between the Eyes by Richard Deacon extends from and connects the two towers on the SW corner of Yonge and Queens Quay.
Our redesign of the plaza improves the functionality of the space and re-establishes its connection to the waterfront. The design creates flexible and comfortable ‘people’ spaces by introducing more green to the site with large planting beds, low maintenance seasonal planting, and shaded seating created by integrating the original tree locations with new specimens. Circulation routes across the site have been established while maintaining strategic views to the water, with the sculpture reintegrated as a focal point of the plaza.
The redesign of the plaza stemmed from the need to replace the site’s waterproofing and garage roof slab restoration. The project involved consultation with the Condominium Board and local business owners to ensure the design met the needs of all stakeholders, and with the City and Waterfront Toronto because of it’s surrounding development.
