The Ivey Business School is a world-renowned institution. It was therefore important that our approach to the building’s landscape design, which includes entry gardens, a central courtyard, and streetscapes, be complementary to that reputation and help to showcase the school as a one-of-a-kind place to learn and network with fellow students.

JRS was a sub-consultant to Hariri Pontarini Architects (HPA) and was responsible for the landscape components of the project. The landscape was designed to be in complement to the building’s natural palette of materials including stone, copper, steel and wood. The quadrangle layout of the building maximizes natural light and views to the central courtyard, allowing students a connection with the natural world.

Large specimen trees were sourced for the central courtyard lending visual impact through all four seasons. Low stone benches frame geometric beds planted with hardy and drought tolerant material and a large square lawn. The courtyard is designed to accommodate casual meetings, study and passive recreation.

At the front entrance a tranquil water feature planted with lilies and surrounded by a bed of ornamental grasses welcomes visitors, students and staff alike. Innovative site strategies were employed to achieve a sustainable design, including the selection of the site and vegetation, the storm water management strategy, and the use of locally sourced materials. The project was achieved on an aggressive and ambitious project schedule. The project achieved LEED Gold certification.
